2015 challenges: urbanisation

Hello.

This article is interesting for understand -from sociology- a demography's inquiry results. The statistics announced by "The Guardian" are useful for interpret this social phenomenon, they do a prediction of the urban population in 2050.
Then, comes the question: Which are the causes of rural to urban migration? "The Guardian" notes that the causes are connected with the convenience and access to services. This is so interesting for social sciences because economic factor is working behind, in this same way, the human's movement imply a growth of "slums" (in Chile also know as "Población Callampa"). So, the rural to urban migration causes a social-spatial problem.

Another important things are Pollution, Public Policy, Disaster-Resilience, etc.
In first place, while the population (in cities) is increasing, the pollution (in cities) is increasing too, this problem results of the competition for space, jobs, water and energy.
Secondly, the public policies are insufficient to cover all the services that the city's government should. The spatial policy don't consider the people that lives in slums, so they don't have space in the community's decisions.
Finally, the disaster-resilience is another problem of city's overpopulation. In this way, the problem is that "natural and man-made disasters require a fundamental understanding of the urban dynamic", for example, the Ébola is a big problem because it's a very contagious disease that could cause death and the population it's very near one from one another, wherewith the bio-hazard is high.

Finally, I would like to say that this area of studies it's very interesting for me (demography, statistics and sociology of the city), so this post about the urbanization helps me to understand better this topic.

It's all for now.

  1. Something I really hate from this urbanisation is the pollution because people in general don't see the consequences in the long run.
